Our Founder - Ncumisa Matshikwe

The visionary founder of Khululekani Laboratory Services, was born and raised in Pirie Mission, a rural area in the Eastern Cape, close to the small town of King Williams Town. From a young age, Ncumisa exhibited a passion for learning. Encouraged and guided by her parents, she developed a keen interest in Mathematics and Chemistry, subjects that would later shape her academic and professional journey. Ncumisa’s academic pursuit led her to Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape and Turfloop University, now known as the University of Limpopo, in Limpopo province. There, she earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Mathematics and Chemistry, equipping her with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in her chosen fields.

In 1982, driven by the desire to explore new employment opportunities, Ncumisa relocated to Johannesburg. Her career in the bustling city saw her working for several prestigious companies, including IBM, Hoechst Pharmaceuticals, and Upjohn. These roles not only broadened her experience but also honed her expertise, setting the stage for her eventual entrepreneurial venture.

Drawing from her extensive background in science and industry, Ncumisa Matshikwe founded Khululekani Laboratory Services, a company dedicated to providing high- quality laboratory services. Her journey from a rural upbringing in Pirie Mission to becoming a respected entrepreneur in Johannesburg is a testament to her determination, intellect, and unwavering commitment to excellence. In 1997, Pharmacia & Upjohn decided to close their laboratory function, meaning that Ncumisa, along with all the laboratory staff at the time faced retrenchment.

Undeterred by this setback, Ncumisa approached Pharmacia & Upjohn with a unique business proposal to take over the testing function of their imported products. She successfully absorbed two laboratory staff members and embarked on an arduous journey to obtain the necessary licenses from the Medicines Control Council (now known as SAHPRA).

Despite facing multiple rejections, Ncumisa’s determination paid off, and she finally secured her SAHPRA license after three attempts. In 1998, Khululekani Laboratory Services officially opened its doors with its very first client being Pharmacia & Upjohn. Since then, KLS has been providing exceptional laboratory services to pharmaceutical companies, ensuring high standards of quality assurance for their imported products. With a focus on professionalism and precision, KLS has earned a reputation for delivering reliable results and exceeding customer expectations.

After a courageous battle with illness, Ncumisa Matshikwe peacefully passed away in September 2023, leaving behind a legacy of determination, leadership, and innovation. As the founder of Khululekani Laboratory Services (KLS), Ncumisa’s vision and dedication were instrumental in shaping the company into a beacon of excellence in laboratory services. Despite her untimely departure, Ncumisa’s spirit lives on through KLS, which now boasts a dedicated staff complement of 23 employees.

Ncumisa Matshikwe’s vision and values continue to guide KLS as it reaches new heights and strives for even greater achievements. Her legacy serves as a source of inspiration, motivating the team to uphold her principles of integrity, professionalism, and client- centric service.

As KLS moves forward, it honors Ncumisa’s memory by maintaining the same dedication to excellence that she instilled in the company from its inception. Her contributions to the field of laboratory services and her impact on those who knew her will be remembered fondly, ensuring that her legacy continues to shine brightly within KLS and beyond.
